HOLMFIRTH artWEEK

Thats it for another year – the next event will be:

— Sun 5th July to Sat 11th July 2009—

— 42 creative years, 42 years of charitable giving —

artWEEK is a local event with a national reputation – most of the exhibitors are from this area but visitors come from all over the country to look and to buy. It is astounding how much artistic talent there is locally – it is this that makes the event such a success . . . and brings so many visitors to Holmfirth every year.

The main Exhibition in the Civic Hall runs all week and features work by 425 professional & amateur artists.

In addition there are over 20 smaller fringe venues around the Valley each year.

History

The first Holmfirth Art Exhibition was organised in 1967 by Isobel Shaw and Christabel Dangerfield. Their twin objectives were to provide an opportunity for local art students to show their work and to raise money for Cancer Relief (as it was then called) – on that occassion a grand total of £120 was raised for the charity.

Their legacy is an annual event which sells 2000 artworks every year and regularly raises in excess of £30,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Having acheived our target of £40,000 for the 40th event in 2006 artWEEK has so far raised over HALF A MILLION POUNDS.

£35 000

Sales of art work at the Civic Hall during the week totalled almost £90 000 – the commission on this (plus money from tickets, catalogues, raffle, tea-room and the Fringe) means that we were able to give £35 000 Macmillan Cancer Support.

No-one gets paid to run artWEEK and it couldn’t take place without the dedicated volunteers who give their time year after year – we wish to thank them all for their splendid efforts in making this the biggest fundraising event in the Valley’s calendar.

How to apply to exhibit next year

Holmfirth artWEEK 2009 will be open to all artists, amateur and professional. Each person may submit up to two pieces – there is no selection process for the public entries but space is limited, and the Exhibition is always over-subscribed, so a draw is held to select each year’s exhibitors. Next year’s draw will take place on Fri 1 May 2009 and applications will be accepted from Wed 1 April 2009.

Applications can only be accepted if accompanied by a cheque for £5 (payable to ‘Holmfirth artWEEK’) and a large (preferably C5* size) stamped, self-addressed envelope.

* C5 size takes an A4 sheet folded in half – 23cm × 16cm (approx 9"× 6½").

There is no application form for this part of the process and details about the work to be submitted aren’t required at this stage (sending photos is not necessary).

If your application is succesful you will receive instructions in the first week of May about submitting your work; if your name is not drawn your cheque will be returned. If you aren’t lucky this time please try again next year.

Send your application to arrive
between 1 and 30 April 2009 to:

Holmfirth artWEEK
PO Box 57
HOLMFIRTH     HD9  1YT

Postage rates: *

Envelopes larger than C5 cost more to post. Please make sure you include the correct postage on both your envelopes.

     Up to C5:  36p (1st) or 27p (2nd)

     Over  C5:  52p (1st) or 42p (2nd)

* Correct, Jul 2008 – but you can bet they will go up before next April!

Help!

Would you like to help make artWEEK 2009 a success? All the people you see working at the Exhibition are volunteers – stewards, tearoom staff, sales desk staff, raffle ticket sellers (not to mention those behind the screens who you may not see – organisers, screen builders, lighting fitters, picture hangers, adminstrators . . .). The whole event is run voluntarily and each day we need 80 people to keep things running smoothly – so, if you can spare a few hours please get in touch.

In addition we especially need help setting up and dismantling the Exhibition.

Setting up screens happens a week before the opening on the Sunday morning (28 June 2009) from 9.00.

Taking everything down and putting it all away is on Sunday after the Exhibiton closes (12 July 2009), also from 9.00.

Please come along on one or both dates – your help will be greatly appreciated! Just turn up or call Richard on 01484  68 94 64.

The success of artWEEK depends entirely on the enthusiastic help willingly given by so many people. We’d like to thank you for the part you played in last year’s event, whether by exhibiting your work, staffing the exhibition or the craft market, demonstrating your craft, helping in the construction & dismantling of the display stands, donating your goods, or in any other way. Please be assured that whatever your contribution it is very much appreciated by us all.

Collection of purchases
and unsold works next year

All work on display is for sale and may be paid for at any time when the Exhibition is open. The work remains on display until the end of the Exhibition on Saturday 11 July 2009.

When the Exhibition closes at 17.00 on Sat 11 July purchases may be collected on presentation of the buyer’s receipt. Please note that we arent able to provide wrapping material for the 2000 items sold so, if you want your purchases wrapped, please bring your own wrapping.

Artists may also collect their unsold works at the same time (cheques for work which has been sold will be ready as soon as possible after 18.30 – but please have patience as we have to calculate final payments and write cheques for nearly 400 people!).
